How Many Points Do You Need for Business Class? Route-by-Route Numbers
The Short Answer
Booked well, a one-way Business Class seat costs roughly 50,000 to 90,000 points to Europe, 52,000 to 110,000 to Asia, and 75,000 to 110,000 to Bali or Southeast Asia. Booked badly, the exact same seats can cost double. The difference is which loyalty program you book through, and that is the entire game.
One credit card signup bonus is typically 60,000 to 150,000 points. So a single well-chosen card can be a Business Class flight across an ocean.
US to Europe
- Air France / KLM Flying Blue: promo awards from around 50,000 points one way in Business.
- Air Canada Aeroplan: typically 60,000 to 70,000 points one way on Star Alliance airlines.
- Avianca LifeMiles: around 63,000 points one way, with no fuel surcharges.
- Book the same seats through the wrong program and you can pay 100,000+ points plus hundreds in surcharges.
US to Japan and Asia
- ANA Business Class via Virgin Atlantic points: one of the most famous deals in the hobby, often under 100,000 points ROUND TRIP from the West Coast.
- Japan Airlines via Alaska: strong Business Class pricing with easy one-stop routings.
- One of our members flew Los Angeles to Tokyo in ANA Business, a $5,000 seat, for 52,500 points plus $315 in taxes.
US to Bali and Southeast Asia
Expect roughly 75,000 to 110,000 points one way in Business, usually routed through Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, or Tokyo on airlines like Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, or Singapore Airlines. Real examples from our member bookings: Hong Kong to San Francisco in Cathay Business for 105,000 points plus $160 (retail $5,191), and Bangkok to San Francisco in EVA Business for 110,000 points plus $59 (retail $3,754).
Why the Ranges Are So Wide
Award pricing is not one number. It depends on the program's award chart (or lack of one), the partner airline, the day, and how far ahead you book. The skill is checking a route across every program that can book it and picking the cheapest door into the same plane. That research is the core of what we do for members.
How Fast Can You Earn Enough?
With a strategic card plan, most of our members earn 200,000 to 400,000 points in their first six months from signup bonuses on spending they were already doing. That is multiple one-way Business Class seats within the first year, on the way to 1,000,000+ points over 18 months.
